{"id":3488,"date":"2013-02-02T04:30:46","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T11:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/?p=3488"},"modified":"2013-02-02T04:59:39","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T11:59:39","slug":"galens-prophecy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/galens-prophecy\/","title":{"rendered":"Galen&#8217;s Prophecy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jerome Kagan (1994)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JeromeKagan_GalensProphecy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3489 alignnone\" alt=\"JeromeKagan_GalensProphecy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JeromeKagan_GalensProphecy.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JeromeKagan_GalensProphecy.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.realfuture.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JeromeKagan_GalensProphecy-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>It would be easy, flipping casually through the pages of Kagan&#8217;s book, or glancing at its table of contents, to underestimate the profoundness that lies within.\u00c2\u00a0 And indeed, most of the book constitutes a rather densely written account of studies into the difference between inhibited and uninhibited children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But to me, <em>Galen&#8217;s Prophecy<\/em> holds deep seeds of implication to philosophy and our understanding of human nature.\u00c2\u00a0 I will attempt a summary of both.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Have you ever wondered which, if any, attributes of any particular person&#8217;s behaviour or psychology are immutable, and which are pliable?\u00c2\u00a0 Which of your own personality traits you are potentially able to change, and which traits will remain with you to your dying days?\u00c2\u00a0 Although easily obscured amongst dense psychological and neurological detail, <em>this<\/em> is the very question that motivates Kagan in his work, and accounts for the books subtitle, &#8216;Temperament in Human Nature&#8217;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0&#8216;Temperament&#8217;, by Kagan&#8217;s now widely adopted definition, refers to that constellation of attributes that individuals are just stuck with.\u00c2\u00a0 A touchy subject, of course &#8211; not least becomes it lays the groundwork for organising people into neat <strong>categories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Philosophically, the concept of the category is hugely interesting to me &#8211; and the present context is certainly no exception!\u00c2\u00a0 There are also real implications here for how we set about thinking about personality and behaviour.\u00c2\u00a0 Consider, as a teaser, how different it is to be living in a world populated with discrete groups or clusters of behaviour, rather than one in which individuals&#8217; traits occupy positions along linear continua.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jerome Kagan (1994) It would be easy, flipping casually through the pages of Kagan&#8217;s book, or glancing at its table of contents, to underestimate the profoundness that lies within.\u00c2\u00a0 And indeed, most of the book constitutes a rather densely written account of studies into the difference between inhibited and uninhibited children.
