When Cameron’s Avatar<\/em> came out, I could find no-one to go and watch it with.\u00c2\u00a0 The price of being steeped in Seattlelite counter-culturalism, probably.\u00c2\u00a0 Personally, I thought it would be cool to go and watch a mainstream film.\u00c2\u00a0 (I call this inclination counter-culturalism-squared.)\u00c2\u00a0 Anyway, when, months later, I was finally afforded the possibility of viewing it with a couple of 5-year-olds, this is what I thought:<\/p>\n

“Avatar is awesome”.<\/p>\n

That’s right.\u00c2\u00a0 And on this issue, I’ll take on any of you tree-huggin’ hippies out there.\u00c2\u00a0 (First, I’d kick your ass at tree huggin’).<\/p>\n

Next, I’d agree that, yes, Avatar<\/em> is<\/em> a block-buster movie and thus part of the unsustainable capitalist empire etc. etc.\u00c2\u00a0 And yes, no trace of artistic nuance graces the leveraging of archetypes (good|evil; hero-stranger|chieftain’s daughter; etc.|etc.) in Avatar’<\/em>s rather planar plot.<\/p>\n

But consider which entities occupy<\/em> the archetypes.\u00c2\u00a0 Consider the themes that Avatar<\/em> uses to exploit emotional capital.\u00c2\u00a0 Wait, humans as the bad<\/em> guys?\u00c2\u00a0 Indigenous rights, anyone?\u00c2\u00a0 Resource exploitation?\u00c2\u00a0 These<\/em> are the issues which speak to the 21st Century’s global audience?<\/p>\n

Sure, I’ll go out and say it out loud: Avatar <\/em>is symptomatic of … of … the changing World Spirit, if you will.\u00c2\u00a0 The tide is on Our side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
